1913 ( Frederick Soddy )ВP- Soddy origi
1910 ( Robert Millikan ) – Millikan determined the unit charge of the electron using his oil drop experiment at the University of Chicago.ВPThis experiment resulted in finding the calculation of the mass of the electron and also, the positively charged atoms. Robert’s number to find this out wasВP e = 1.60 x 10-19ВPcoulombs.
1907 (Ernest Rutherford ) – Ernest Rutherford was British physicist that worked with nuclear physics. He’s known for his theory that explains the structure of the atom.
1897 ( J.J Thomson ) – J.J. Thompson was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize. He was the one that discovered the electron.
1896 ( Henri Becquerel ) – Henri studied affects of x-rays on photographic film, which lead to him discovering radiation. For his discovery of radioactivity, Becquerel was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize for physics.
1885 ( Eugene Goldstein ) – Eugene is known for discovering positive particles by using a tube filled with hydrogen gas. The positive particle had a charge equal and opposite to the electron. The particle also had a mass of 1.66E-24 grams, which was also one atomic mass unit (amu). The positive particle was then named the “proton”.
1869 ( Dmitri Mendeleev ) – Mendeleev arranged elements into 7 groups with similar properties.ВP He discovered that the properties of elementsВP”were periodic functions of their atomic weights”. ВPThe result of this was known as the Periodic Law.
1803 ( John Dalton ) – He developed the atomic theory using the foundations of modern physical science. What he’s known for and his most important contribution to science was his theory that matter is composed of atoms of differing weights. ВPAnd how they combine in simple ratios by weight.
460 B.C ( Democritus ) – He was a Greek philosopher, who developed the theory that all matter is composed of tiny particles, which he named “Atomos”. The theory says that “These atoms are all individually created and cannot be separated, no matter what scientific procedures are applied.”
